Patrick Hickey was born in India in 1927 and studied Architecture and later History of Art and Italian at University College Dublin. He began painting in 1954, and by 1957, having received an Italian State Scholarship, he studied etching and lithography in Urbino.
He was one of the founders of the Graphic Studio Dublin in 1962 and he presided over production there until the studio moved to Green Street East in the eighties. He was one of the chief designers of the Irish currency notes in 1974 and he continued to create prints until his death in 1998.
