Alan Burke
Working primarily in wood, stone and metals, I produce artworks, both small scale for the home and larger public sculpture for hospitals, housing developments and public buildings. My practice began with traditional carving skills and techniques and currently incorporating more industrial metal working processes into a craft context. To this end, I hope to produce a more utilitarian product, with strong artistic qualities.
My small-scale gallery works are sculptural forms and textures worked into a loosely functional format. Although functionality is not the main aspect, I believe the cross over between form and function increase the works accessibility. Much of my work is concerned with the textures of the world around and subsequently the forces that create them. This may be found in wind, water, earth and air in their multitude of combinations. In us all, universal fingerprints of our environment are subconsciously familiar yet curious when focused on out of context. It is this sensuous familiarity that I hope to create in my work, while blurring the boundaries between sculpture, craft and utility.
